Tangri River pipeline chamber, Ambala, July 31: The Irrigation and Water Resources Department has directed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to immediately remove a pipeline outlet chamber constructed in the bed of the Tangri River near the Ambala–Jagadhri Road bridge, warning that it could obstruct the natural flow of water during the monsoon and increase the risk of flooding in nearby areas.
The department has written to the NHAI Project Director, stating that urgent action is required before heavy rainfall intensifies across the region.
Department Warns of Flood Risk
According to officials, the pipeline outlet chamber has been built in the middle of the Tangri River, directly beneath the Ambala–Jagadhri Road bridge. The Irrigation Department believes the structure could significantly reduce the river’s water-carrying capacity during periods of heavy rainfall.
Officials warned that any obstruction to the river’s natural flow may result in waterlogging and increase the likelihood of flooding in surrounding localities during the ongoing monsoon season.
Previous Warnings Allegedly Ignored
The department stated that concerns regarding the structure had already been raised during earlier site inspections. Junior Engineers and Sub-Divisional Officers reportedly advised NHAI officials to remove the chamber before the onset of heavy rains.
Despite repeated requests, officials claim no corrective action has been taken. As a result, the matter has now been categorized as urgent, with fresh written instructions issued to NHAI.
Irrigation Department Suggests Relocation
In its communication, the department has recommended that the existing outlet chamber be dismantled immediately and reconstructed at a safer location where it will not interfere with the river’s natural course.
Officials stressed that timely action is necessary to avoid potential flood-related emergencies during the peak monsoon period.
Local Residents Express Concern
Residents from flood-prone areas also voiced concern over the construction. Local citizens, including Kamal Kant and Narendra Saini, questioned why a permanent structure had been allowed within the river channel despite recurring flood risks in the region.
They said that if government agencies themselves permit construction that could obstruct waterways, it raises serious concerns about flood management and public safety.
Official Statement
Sub-Divisional Officer Sukhwinder Singh of the Irrigation Department stated that the pipeline chamber has been constructed in a manner that could obstruct water flow and lead to waterlogging in nearby areas.
He confirmed that a formal notice has been sent to NHAI requesting the immediate removal of the structure so that the river can carry monsoon runoff without obstruction.
Further Action Expected
The Irrigation Department is awaiting a response from NHAI regarding the removal of the pipeline chamber. Officials have emphasized that preventive measures taken before peak monsoon conditions are critical to minimizing flood risks and protecting surrounding residential areas.
