Ambala Cantt Freehold Demand
Ambala: The long-standing demand for freehold status for properties in Ambala Cantonment has taken a political turn. On Wednesday, political leader Chitra Sarwara staged a protest at Sadar Bazaar Chowk along with her supporters, demanding that the government take concrete steps to resolve the ownership-related issues faced by residents of the cantonment.
The issue of freehold rights has been raised on social media for some time. However, the latest protest has brought the matter into the political spotlight, with Sarwara openly challenging the government over the lack of a clear policy and implementation timeline.
Chitra Sarwara Raises Questions Over Property Rights
While addressing the protesters, Chitra Sarwara said that the issue has remained unresolved for years despite repeated meetings and discussions. According to her, residents are still waiting for a concrete solution, while the situation on the ground has largely remained unchanged.
She questioned who should be held responsible for the No Objection Certificate (NOC) system introduced in the 1990s and the registration process that was reportedly stopped around the year 2000.
Sarwara demanded that the government make the reasons behind these decisions public and explain why residents have continued to face difficulties regarding ownership of their properties.
Residents Facing Difficulties Due to NOC and Closed Registries
According to Sarwara, the NOC requirement and closure of property registrations have affected the rights of residents in Ambala Cantonment.
She said people are facing difficulties in using their properties for important purposes such as obtaining bank loans, carrying out construction and transferring property ownership.
She argued that residents should not have to depend on repeated assurances from the authorities. Instead, they need a clear freehold policy, defined procedures and a fixed timeline for implementation.
‘Team Chitra Azad Ambala Cantt’ Campaign From August 15
Sarwara also announced the launch of a campaign called “Team Chitra Azad Ambala Cantt” from August 15.
As part of the campaign, supporters will reportedly conduct a signature campaign at the booth level to gather public support for the freehold demand. An online campaign will also be launched to highlight the issue and reach a wider audience.
The campaign is expected to focus on the property ownership concerns of residents and put further pressure on the government to formulate a clear policy.
Freehold Issue Gains Political Momentum
The freehold issue in Ambala Cantonment has been discussed for years, but the latest protest indicates that it is increasingly becoming a political issue.
Sarwara said the people of Ambala Cantonment need a permanent solution rather than assurances. She emphasized that residents should receive clear ownership rights over their properties along with a transparent policy governing registration, construction and property transfers.
The campaign beginning on August 15 is likely to keep the freehold issue in the public and political spotlight in the coming days.
