Ambala sanitation workers strike
Ambala, August 26, 2026: The strike by sanitation and fire department employees in Ambala continued for the 21st consecutive day on Wednesday. Employees associated with the Municipal Council staged a protest at the gate of the Ambala Sadar Municipal Council office, raising slogans against the state government and expressing anger over alleged action against employees in different districts.
The protest was held under the leadership of Sevaram Bohat, president of the employees’ unit. District president Birpal Kangra addressed the protesting employees and condemned what he described as harsh action against workers in several districts of Haryana.
Employees Accuse Government of Ignoring Their Demands
Employee leader Rajinder said workers have been left with no option but to continue the strike because, according to them, the government is not taking steps to regularise their employment. He alleged that employees are instead being excluded from categories that could potentially lead to permanent employment.
Another employee leader, Rahul, said sanitation and fire department workers have spent years serving the public and administration. He said employees also deserve the opportunity to live a dignified life and accused the government of discrimination.
According to the protesting employees, the Haryana government has made around 18,000 permanent Group-D appointments in other departments, but no sanitation worker across the state has been regularised through similar measures.
Anger Over Police Action
The employees also expressed their displeasure over alleged police action against protesting workers in various parts of the state. Union leaders termed such action unacceptable and said employees would continue to raise their demands through collective protest.
The workers said their struggle is not limited to salary or employment-related issues but also concerns job security, regularisation and their rights as employees who provide essential civic services.
Public Support Claimed by Employees
The union leaders said they were receiving support from members of the public during the ongoing agitation. They claimed that people understand the difficulties faced by sanitation and fire department employees and are supporting their demands.
The Municipal Employees Union Haryana reiterated that the movement would continue with unity and determination until the workers’ demands are addressed.
The sanitation and fire department employees’ strike has now entered its 21st day, keeping the focus on the long-standing demands of municipal workers in Ambala and across Haryana.
