Ambala, Haryana | August 14, 2026 – Jhinda Alleges Betrayal
Tension escalated in Ambala on Thursday night after a protest by members of the Sikh community turned chaotic, with Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee president Jagdish Singh Jhinda accusing the police administration of betraying protesters.
Jhinda alleged that the protesters were preparing to end their sit-in after receiving assurances from senior officials and the Chief Minister’s residence, but police suddenly used water cannons and tear gas against the gathering.
Jhinda Claims Protest Was About to End
Speaking at a press conference, Jhinda said discussions with senior police officials were continuing at around 8:13 pm on Thursday. He claimed that he also received a call from the Chief Minister’s residence during the negotiations.
According to Jhinda, the protesters were given an assurance that appropriate action would be taken in the matter. He said the Sikh community representatives were satisfied with the administration’s response and were preparing to announce the end of the sit-in.
However, Jhinda alleged that the situation changed suddenly when police used water cannons and tear gas shells against the protesters.
He described the incident as a betrayal and accused the administration of misleading the protesting community.
Protesters Broke Police Barricades and Blocked GT Road
The situation had already become tense earlier in the evening. According to the report, agitated members of the Sikh community moved beyond Panjokhra Sahib and broke through four police barricades.
The protesters then reached GT Road in front of Jaggi City Centre, bringing traffic on the highway to a complete standstill.
Police initially issued warnings and used tear gas when the protesters did not move away from the road. When the crowd continued to remain on GT Road, police carried out a lathi charge at around 8:30 pm, dispersing the protesters.
Stone-Pelting Reported, DSP Among Police Personnel Injured
The confrontation reportedly became more serious during the police action. The report states that protesters allegedly engaged in heavy stone-pelting.
There were also allegations that sharp-edged weapons were used during the confrontation. A DSP and several other police personnel were reportedly seriously injured.
Heavy police deployment has been maintained in the area following the incident, with authorities continuing to monitor the situation.
The incident has intensified tensions in Ambala, while allegations from the Sikh community and the police administration’s account of the events remain central to the developing situation.
