Markanda River Ambala
The impact of continuous rainfall in the Himalayan foothills is now being felt across the plains of Ambala, where the Markanda River has witnessed a sharp rise in water level. The river began swelling rapidly on Tuesday afternoon, prompting authorities to closely monitor the situation.
According to officials, the river’s water level started increasing significantly after noon. By 4:00 PM, the flow had reached nearly 7 feet (around 28,000 cusecs). Within the next one and a half hours, the level rose further to 8 feet (approximately 33,500 cusecs), indicating a strong surge in water discharge.
Floodwater Reaches Agricultural Fields
As the river continued to swell, water overflowed into agricultural fields in several nearby villages around Mulana. The sudden rise has raised concerns among farmers, who fear possible damage to standing crops if the water level continues to increase.
Although no major damage has been officially reported so far, local residents remain cautious as water continues to spread across low-lying farmland.
Administration Closely Monitoring the Situation
District authorities and the Irrigation Department are keeping a close watch on the river’s flow. Officials have urged residents not to approach the riverbanks or attempt to cross flooded areas until the water level stabilizes.
Emergency teams remain on alert to respond quickly if the situation worsens due to continued rainfall in the upper catchment areas.
Rain Brings Relief Along With Concerns
While the swollen river has created anxiety for farmers living near its banks, the widespread rainfall has also brought much-needed relief from prolonged heat and humidity across the region.
The drop in temperature has made the weather pleasant after several days of uncomfortable conditions. Farmers have welcomed the rainfall because paddy crops require a large amount of water during this stage of cultivation. Adequate rainfall is expected to benefit agricultural productivity, provided flooding remains under control.
