Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced that the upcoming ₹85-crore Ambala Science Centre will be named after Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee, the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and a prominent freedom fighter. The Chief Minister also declared that a grand statue of Dr. Mukherjee will be installed near the under-construction Martyrs’ Memorial (Shaheed Smarak) in Ambala.
The announcement was made during the 125th remembrance programme of Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee, held in Ambala City on Monday.
Science Centre to Honour Dr. Mukherjee’s Legacy
Addressing the gathering, CM Nayab Singh Saini described Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee as a leader whose life was dedicated to nationalism, public service, and principles rather than political power.
He stated that the new Science Centre, currently being developed at an estimated cost of ₹85 crore, will permanently bear Dr. Mukherjee’s name. Additionally, a large statue will be installed near the Shaheed Smarak to honour his contribution to the nation.
PM Narendra Modi to Visit Jind on July 17
During his speech, the Chief Minister also announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend a special programme in Jind on July 17 as the chief guest.
Saini invited people from across Haryana to participate in the event, describing it as an important public programme.
Two-Year Birth Anniversary Celebrations Continue Until 2027
The Chief Minister said the two-year birth anniversary celebrations of Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee, which began last year, will continue until July 2027.
He highlighted that Dr. Mukherjee became the youngest Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta at the age of 33 and later resigned from the Union Cabinet in 1950 over ideological differences before founding the Bharatiya Jana Sangh.
Historic Connection Between Dr. Mukherjee and Ambala
Saini recalled Dr. Mukherjee’s historic association with Ambala. He said that on May 8, 1953, while travelling from Delhi to Jammu and Kashmir, Dr. Mukherjee sent a message to the then Chief Minister Sheikh Abdullah from Ambala Cantonment Railway Station, informing him that he was entering Jammu and Kashmir without a permit.
The Chief Minister noted that Dr. Mukherjee later addressed a public gathering in Ambala before being arrested after entering Jammu and Kashmir without a permit. He described Mukherjee’s sacrifice as a significant contribution to India’s unity and integrity.
Reference to ‘One Nation, One Constitution’
Speaking about Dr. Mukherjee’s vision, the Chief Minister said the slogan of “One Nation, One Constitution” had been fulfilled under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He added that India is moving towards becoming a developed nation by 2047, inspired by the ideals and vision of leaders like Dr. Mukherjee.
Several BJP leaders, including Sudha Yadav, Dr. Archana Gupta, Aseem Goel, and Banto Kataria, paid floral tributes to Dr. Mukherjee during the event.
