Contaminated Water Ambala – Residents of Kashyap Mohalla in Shahzadpur, Ambala, are facing a serious public health crisis after a suspected contaminated water supply reportedly caused widespread illness in the locality. Local residents claim nearly every household in the lane has family members suffering from symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and jaundice-like illness.
The situation became more alarming after the death of a young girl who had been undergoing treatment at PGI Chandigarh for nearly 20 days. While the Health Department has not officially confirmed the cause of death, the incident has intensified concerns among residents about the quality of drinking water in the area.
Old Water Connection Identified as Possible Source
According to officials from the Public Health Engineering Department, an old and abandoned pipeline connection was found allowing contaminated water to mix with the drinking water supply. The department has since excavated the affected area and sealed the damaged connection to prevent further contamination.
Officials stated that similar aging pipelines are being identified and replaced as part of an ongoing maintenance drive to improve the water distribution system.
Residents Say Almost Every Family Has Been Affected by Contaminated Water Ambala
Several residents shared their experiences with the ongoing crisis.
Sanjeev Kumar said yellowish, foul-smelling water had been coming through household taps, causing his son to remain ill for nearly 10 days. Although he has recovered, the child is still experiencing weakness.
Residents Rajni and Jaswinder said multiple children in their families fell sick over the past few weeks. Jaswinder’s eldest daughter required hospitalization for over two weeks, while her other daughters later developed jaundice-like symptoms. Another resident, Pinki, reported that both her four-year-old son and visiting niece also became ill.
Locals have also criticized poor drainage maintenance and delayed action despite repeated complaints about contaminated water.
Health Department Collects Water Samples
Following the reports, teams from the Health Department and Public Health Engineering Department visited the locality to assess the situation. Water samples have been collected for laboratory testing, and officials are awaiting the results.
Medical teams have distributed medicines to affected families and arranged water tankers to provide safe drinking water. Residents have also been advised not to consume tap water until the investigation is complete and to use boiled or purified water instead.
Authorities Assure Long-Term Solution
Public Health Engineering officials said the damaged pipeline responsible for contamination has been disconnected and that the department will continue replacing outdated water connections across the area.
Health officials are closely monitoring the situation and have assured residents that additional medical camps and preventive measures will be organized if required.
