Ambala Highway Incident, August 4: A family dispute took a tragic turn in Ambala on Tuesday when a 35-year-old man allegedly jumped in front of a moving truck on the Ambala-Delhi Highway near Kali Paltan Bridge after an argument with his wife. The man, a father of three, sustained serious injuries and was referred to PGIMER Chandigarh after receiving first aid at the Civil Hospital in Ambala Cantonment.
According to police and family members, the man had travelled from Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, to Ambala after his wife left their home and came to stay with her relatives in Ambala City. His wife alleged that he frequently consumed alcohol and often assaulted her, prompting her to leave with their three children and seek shelter at her maternal uncle’s residence near Manav Chowk.
On Tuesday, the couple was reportedly heading toward the railway station when the man got out of an auto-rickshaw near Kali Paltan Bridge and began creating a disturbance on the highway. Witnesses said he threatened to end his life before suddenly jumping in front of a truck travelling towards Delhi.
The collision left him with fractures in both legs and multiple injuries. He was rushed to Ambala Cantonment Civil Hospital, where doctors provided emergency treatment. Hospital staff also prevented him from attempting to injure himself again while receiving treatment. Considering his critical condition, doctors referred him to PGIMER Chandigarh for advanced medical care.
Police officials stated that they had earlier received information about a man creating a disturbance on the highway divider. Officers attempted to calm him down for nearly two hours, but he allegedly refused to cooperate and even chased police personnel with a brick during the intervention. After briefly detaining him and later allowing him to leave with his wife, police were informed shortly afterward that he had jumped in front of the truck.
The incident is under investigation, and authorities are awaiting further updates on his medical condition from PGIMER Chandigarh.
