Fake Vigilance Officer Arrested, Ambala: A 53-year-old man accused of posing as a railway vigilance officer and allegedly extorting money from train staff was arrested from the Chhattisgarh Express during a joint operation by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) in Ambala.
The accused has been identified as Sudhir Kumar, a resident of Vasant Vihar, Delhi. According to the police, he allegedly used a fake railway vigilance identity card to intimidate Travelling Ticket Examiners (TTEs) and pantry staff during train journeys. During the investigation, police claimed that he had travelled on more than 300 trains across the country over the past two years, allegedly posing as a vigilance official.
Fake ID Card and Walkie-Talkie Recovered
According to GRP officials, information was received at the control room at around 12:20 am on Monday night that a suspicious man was moving around the A-2 AC coach of train number 18238 Chhattisgarh Express, claiming to be a vigilance officer.
Following the information, the CIB/RPF unit and accompanying personnel checked the train. During the search, officials allegedly recovered a fake Railway Vigilance Delhi identity card bearing number 104, related documents and a working Motorola walkie-talkie from the accused.
Police said the accused allegedly used the fake identity card to establish authority during train inspections. He would reportedly threaten TTEs and other railway staff and allegedly demand money from them.
After his arrest, Sudhir Kumar was brought to the GRP post in Ambala, where a case was registered against him.
Allegedly Threatened Station Masters Using Walkie-Talkie
During questioning, police learned that the accused allegedly used the walkie-talkie to create the impression that he was an official with authority over railway operations. He reportedly contacted station masters at various locations, including areas around Delhi, Jammu, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, allegedly using an intimidating manner to strengthen his false identity.
The investigation is now focused on determining how the accused obtained the fake documents and whether anyone else helped him in carrying out the alleged fraud.
Four-Day Police Remand Granted
The accused was produced before a court on Tuesday. The court granted four days of police remand to allow investigators to question him further.
GRP Ambala in-charge Harish Kumar said investigators suspect that the accused may not have acted alone. Police are examining the possibility of other people being involved in the alleged fraud and will investigate their role during the remand period.
The police are also looking into the accused’s alleged activities across different trains over the past two years and are trying to identify other railway employees who may have been targeted.
